ONE Championship announces flyweight and lightweight Grand Prix tournaments

Flyweight and lightweight Grand Prix tournaments will light up ONE Championship events in 2019, and Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez will both be involved

ONE Championship

ONE Championship has announced two Grand Prix tournaments for 2019, and both of their newly-signed mixed martial arts superstars are set to play a major part.

Both former UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez and former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson will make their respective ONE Championship debuts in Grand Prix tournaments in the New Year.

ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced two eight-man Grand Prix tournaments, one for the lightweight division and another for the flyweight class, during the press conference ahead of ONE: HEART OF THE LION in Singapore.

And while Sityodtong admitted there are still “a lot of moving parts” to deal with before the final lineups for the two tournaments are officially finalised, Sityodtong did confirm both Alvarez and Johnson will take their places in their respective tournaments.

Record-breaking flyweight “Mighty Mouse” Johnson said he was incredibly excited to test his skills in a legitimate tournament for the first time in his career.

“When I had the opportunity to become a ONE athlete, I couldn’t pass up that opportunity,” Johnson said.

“Now that they have announced a world grand prix for the flyweight division – it’s always been a dream of mine to compete in Asia in a grand prix.

“I’m going to give my best. I’m not going to take any shortcuts. I’m going to train my butt off. I’m going to come over here and, hopefully, the goal is I’m going to be champion.

“I know the flyweight division here – Geje [Eustaquio], Kairat [Akhmetov], [Danny] Kingad, and Adriano Moraes, those guys are tough, but I’m looking to face those guys.”

The pieces are falling into place at ONE, and 2019 is looking set to be their biggest year yet.
