French MotoGP star Johann Zarco showed he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with in his second season in the sport’s top class as he finished fastest at the three-day MotoGP pre-season test in Qatar.

The full MotoGP start list headed to the Losail circuit, home of the first Grand Prix of the 2018 season, for the three-day test, and it was the Yamahas who were the dominant marque, with Zarco leading the way.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider topped the timesheets with a lap time of 1:54.029 with Movistar Yamaha MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi second quickest, 0.247 behind.

World Championship runner-up Andrea Dovizioso was third-fastest aboard his factory Ducati, three tenths behind Zarco.

The fastest Honda at the test was that of Brit Cal Crutchlow, who piloted his LCR Castrol Honda to fourth on the timesheets with a time of 1:54.457, 0.428 behind Zarco, with Rossi’s factory Yamaha teammate Maverick Vinales fifth.

Zarco’s table-topping test time was all the more remarkable given the fact that it was just over a tenth of a second over the all-time pole lap record set by Jorge Lorenzo back in 2008.

Lorenzo wasn’t able to challenge that time himself, as he toiled in midfield, managing the 10th-fastest time of the weekend with a 1:54.692.

Overall, the top 12 riders were covered by just 0.745 seconds across the three-day test, with the first 21 covered by just over a second and a half.
