One of the latest graduates from the Cage Warriors production line has been handed a stern opening test for his octagon debut.

England’s Chris Fishgold won the Cage Warriors lightweight title outright with three straight title defences and announced a drop to featherweight before being signed by the UFC earlier this summer.

Now his first matchup has been formally announced, with the Liverpudlian set to face Calvin Kattar at UFC Fight Night: Oezdemir vs Smith in Moncton, Canada on October 27.

Kattar (18-3) made a splash on his UFC debut back in July 2017 with a decision victory over Hawaiian UFC mainstay Andre Fili, and the Massachusetts native followed up his impressive start with a TKO finish of Shane Burgos. Most recently, he suffered his first loss in the UFC (and only his third overall) when he was outpointed by rising Brazilian contender Renato Moicano, snapping his 10-fight win streak in the process.

Fishgold, meanwhile, has a record of 17-1-1 with 12 wins coming by way of submission. The former lightweight is riding a seven-fight win streak, with six of those wins coming inside the distance (five by submission, one by TKO).

Fishgold’s bout with Kattar joins a growing lineup of bouts for the October 27 event, which will be headlined by a battle between light-heavyweight knockout artists Volkan Oezdemir and Anthony Smith.

And the English debutant will also be joined on the card by another former Cage Warriors lightweight champion. Scotland’s Stevie Ray was a two-time lightweight champion with the UK-based promotion and vacated the belt in the spring of 2015 after being signed by the UFC.

Fishgold then won the vacant title with a first-round rear-naked choke victory over Adam Boussif, then went on to rack up a hat-trick of title defences before receiving his UFC call-up.

Ray will face German lightweight Jessin Ayari on the Moncton card.
