Cage Warriors 100: Safe MMA hails UK promotion on landmark weekend for UK MMA powerhouse

Cage Warriors 100 takes place in Cardiff this weekend with a packed card including two title fights as the organisation celebrates a landmark moment in their rich history.

The organisation has been a valuable launchpad for fighters’ careers, with the likes of Conor McGregor, Michael Bisping, Dan Hardy and Joanna Jedrzejczyk all passing through Graham Boylan’s UK-based MMA promotion before achieving fame and success in the UFC.

While Cage Warriors is well known for being one of the best “finishing schools” for fighters looking to compete at the highest level, one aspect of their history that is less reported, but every bit as worthy of celebration, is their commitment to fighter safety.

Cage Warriors president Boylan and matchmaker Ian Dean were at the forefront of a group of industry figures – also including UK women’s MMA pioneer Rosi Sexton and internationally respected MMA official Marc Goddard – who came together to help establish Safe MMA, an independent, voluntary, non-profit organisation created to establish a professional standard of care surrounding key aspects of fighter safety around mixed martial arts events.

Safe MMA established medical clearance procedures that have been adopted and maintained by key national and international organisations in the UK and Ireland. Since its inception back in early 2013, Safe MMA has gone on to become a key partner for organisations across the local region. They are also now partner of the unified world MMA governing body, IMMAF-WMMAA.

And ahead of Cage Warriors 100 this weekend, Safe MMA issued a short press release to congratulate the organisation and to highlight the fact that it is also the 48th Cage Warriors event run in conjunction with Safe MMA’s medical practices, following their first Safe MMA-approved event at Cage Warriors 52 on March 9, 2013.

Safe MMA founder and trustee Goddard is now one of the most respected and recognisable officials in the sport, and he said that he was proud of the work that Safe MMA has done to make the sport of mixed martial arts safer and more professional here in the UK.

“It’s of no surprise to me that Cage Warriors, one of the promotions involved at the inception of the initiative, still remains to this day a strong and supportive advocate of the very premise of why we set up Safe MMA,” he said.

“It is heart-warming, and I personally give my gratitude and respect to the organisation whom, on an entirely voluntary basis, continue to adopt safety measures and protocols above and beyond any legal or licensing requirements.

“Here’s to the next 100 shows!”

Cage Warriors 100 features a main event title fight between two of the brightest emerging talents from the UK. Jack “Tank” Shore from Wales and London’s Mike Ekundayo “Airlines” will face off for the vacant Cage Warriors bantamweight title that was last held by Ekundayo’s teammate Nathaniel “The Prospect” Wood.

Wood has since gone on to join the ranks of the UFC, and now Shore and Ekundayo are hoping to follow in “The Prospect’s” footsteps as they battle for 135-pound title in Cardiff on Saturday night.

Also on the card is the culmination of Cage Warriors featherweight championship tournament, as Dean Trueman takes on Aiden Lee in a fascinating clash for the vacant 145-pound belt.

Joining them on a packed card is a host of exciting matchups featuring a plethora of crowd-pleasing names, including Denmark’s former Cage Warriors welterweight champ Nicolas Dalby, former BAMMA welterweight champion Alex Lohore and ex-BAMMA lightweight champ Rhys McKee.
