When I started covering this sport my aim was always to help tell the stories of the remarkable athletes who choose to compete in this, the toughest sport in the world. Their jobs only became tougher when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, making training and preparing for fights particularly difficult, while opportunities to fight became more scarce.
It made things pretty tricky for us as media covering the sport, too. But, thanks to good relationships with the fighters, managers and the promotions themselves, we’ve been able to set up interviews during the shutdown to help keep our coverage moving while also continuing to tell the stories of the fighters themselves.
I can’t wait for the day that I can step back into a packed arena again and cover a fight night in front of a packed crowd of passionate fight fans, but it looks like we’re going to be in for a long wait before that happens. In the meantime, I’m grateful to the fighters for their time during this tricky spell. Hopefully better days are on their way for us all.
